THE University of Newcastle's campus student shuttle bus service would not be cut if security staffing was reduced, the institution said yesterday.

The bus service, which has operated for about 15 years, transports students around the campus from early evening until about 10.30pm.

Its introduction followed attacks on a number of women who had been walking around the campus at night.

Security staff said last week they believed up to three security staff would be forcibly retrenched in coming months, reducing the number of Callaghan security staff to 12.

A university spokesman said yesterday there were no plans to cut the service, but timetabling changes might occur next year.

Students Association welfare officer Jarra Hicks said students valued the bus service.
