A SHUTTLE bus service could soon ferry passengers between key Wollongong locations.
The service would help offset an expected rise in traffic in the CBD in the next 25 years, according to the draft Wollongong City Centre Plan. The shuttle service would connect the city centre to Wollongong Hospital, the University of Wollongong and its Innovation Campus, North Wollongong and railway stations. The Keira St bus interchange would also be moved and the street reopened to traffic, improving the flow around the city.Up to $20 million would be invested in new bus transport projects under the draft, released yesterday.Traffic studies have found traffic will become an increasing problem in the CBD.At present, 88 per cent of work trips and 87 per cent of all trips to the city centre are made using private vehicles."Such traffic growth will result in congestion of the road network, particularly at key access points to and from, and within, the city centre," the plan states. The draft plan also proposes a new $8 million car park. The council has identified five possible sites for the car park in the city centre.
